Breed Tails -Corgi
Is that a Corgi?!
The inevitable question every time we are walking Satay makes her feel a little bit like a celebrity. She now recognises the word ‘corgi’ and immediately knows someone is talking about her and will go up to them for attention! The question is usually followed by “is she mixed with something?”, “My nan (or insert other relative) used to have one!” or “She’s big for a corgi isn’t she?”. I realise other than seeing the late Queen’s ones on TV they aren’t a dog you often see. I thought I would tackle the main question I get asked about being a corgi owner. Whether you are interested in getting a corgi or just love learning about dog breeds please read on…
Big Dog, Little Legs
People often think corgis are small dogs and are surprised by the size when they meet one! Typically, Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s are 22 – 24 inches in length, a little smaller than their Cardigan cousins who are a little longer. So they are by no means small but they stand at just 14 – 17 inches tall! Little legs don’t slow them down, Satay is surprisingly agile which is down to being breed to herd cattle.
Colours and Fur
Corgis come in a range of lovely coat colours, including red and white, tan and white, black and tan, or the distinctive tri-coloured pattern featuring black, tan, and white markings. Satay is slightly unusual as she has a very fluffy coat where most corgis have short fut. Be warned, if you are looking to get a corgi you may also need a new hoover – they shed a lot!
Personality and training
Every dog is different, but from my experience corgi’s are lovely family friendly pets and are great for training as they are very clever and eager to please (or in Satay’s case eager for treats). They like to play by chasing, a characteristic rooted in their herding instincts, whether that be other dogs, a ball or even you! Other than being playful I have found most corgis to be very food motivated so you definitely have to watch what they eat, as they will eat everything and anything.
