The Kidneys Nature Trail

A hidden gem in Oxford that every dog owner should explore

This is probably my most visited nature trail as I was lucky enough to live just around the corner. The Kidneys is a dog friendly nature reserve that is not far from Donnington Bridge Oxford and on the edge of the River Thames. Parking can be a bit hard to find in this area, there used to be a free carpark but sadly this has gone now. You might be best to park in the red bridge park and ride and walk the short distance over the bridge to get into the Kidneys.

The Kidneys used to be a landfill site, and if you peer down rabbit holes you can often see old bottles and bits of pottery. Once I found a lead toy of doctor who’s Tardis, half covered in mud in the path, which In did a detailed drawing off and would show you but sadly have lost. The site was a landfill for much of the 20th century. In the 1980s, the landfill site was capped with a layer of clay and topsoil, and the area was transformed into the beautiful nature park it is today.

The Kidneys is a beautiful 3.4-hectare riverside nature park that provides a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city. This park is a great option for dog owners who want to enjoy a leisurely walk or picnic with your dog. Although it may not be a full-day destination, it is certainly worth a visit for its peaceful setting and stunning scenery.

The park is a haven for wildlife, and you’ll be able to spot various species of birds and butterflies as you walk along the meandering paths. In early April you will be able to spot Snake’s Head Fritillary which is the county flower of Oxfordshire. This beautiful flower is native to the county it has a distinctive bell-shaped flower with a unique checkerboard pattern in shades of purple and white. Its always reminds me Tiffany lampshades.

You can enjoy a leisurely stroll, take in the stunning scenery, and allow your dog to play in the open fields or swim in the river, watch out the boats! Its quite nice to sit on the bank and watch the rowing teams of eight rush past you gliding in the water.

Overall, The Kidneys is an excellent place for dog owners to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in nature. Plus its very near to a great dog friendly pub the Chester Arms.
